Apologies first. Over the last couple of days quite a few of you trying to upload images have been having problems with lost connections etc. We think we have traced the problem down to one of our upload servers. We have fixed this but will continue to monitor the situation.

Thanks to all of you who are reporting successes and failures with AlamyUpload in the forum. We are reading your comments and finding them a useful source of additional information.

Update on roll-out

The roll-out is progressing well and we are now prioritising those contributors who have submitted recently. We will have enabled AlamyUpload for this group of contributors in the next week or so. We will then move on to all remaining contributors and hope to have completed the roll-out by the end of August.

Why stage the roll-out?

It was clear from our testing that releasing AlamyUpload results in a flurry of initial upload activity from a contributor ("giving it a go"). Given the number of contributors we have, we wanted to ensure that our infrastructure wouldn’t struggle to accommodate the demand. The best solution was to enable contributors' accounts in several groups. In addition, we wanted to gradually take up the strain so that we could manage any technical issues resulting from increasing the number of uploaders.

Hints and Tips

  1. For the majority of broadband users the upload speed is much slower than the download speed so do not expect uploading to be as quick as downloading.
  2. In our view JPEGs saved at Photoshop compression level 10 are as good in terms of quality as those saved at 11 or 12 and are no more likely to fail QC. Saving at level 10 produces a smaller file size which will therefore be quicker to upload.
  3. Some clear patterns of usage are emerging which you might find useful. UK evening and night time (17:00 - 00:00 GMT) tend to be the busiest so avoiding these times may increase the speed of upload.

I never submitted anything yet to Alamy, precisely because I was waiting for the AlamyUpload :) It's a little confusing to realize that because of it I will actually have to wait longer. But I can understand you reasons.

I have had upload enabled, but am not able to use it as I cannot have a broadband connection were I live.

I recently sent a CD submission & have recieved an e mail asking me to use the upload facility, however I would prefer to continue using postal submissions until I am in a position to get broadband: will this be possible??

    Regards
    Phil

Upload is not working for me. Both on Safari and on Firefox it gets stuck at 0%, never moves on. I am using a MAC G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.4.10, latest Java Release installed, correct Java environment prioritized.
upload works on my daughters PC.

Thanks for the 'apologies first' above which came on the blog just as I was experiencing lost connections. Now running smoothly & have just uploaded 42 images without a problem.

Uploaded images after loosing connection a few times on the 10th of July I note I am still waiting for QC to pass images. Is it not the idea of the web upload to speed things up . . . . ?

before uploading was enabled on my account i thought i might well just keep taking CDs to the post office at 3 a.m. because i enjoyed doing that...a little quiet time alone with the automated postal machine thingy in the wee hours of the morning was enjoyable to me...sending my neat little package off across the sea with my wishes for a safe trip... ;)

but now i've uploaded a few times i know i won't be going back to using the post. it's at least as nice to send images off across the sea from the comfort of my own bedroom...and to have them arrive immediately, no less!

for those having difficulties with the upload system, i hope you get it ironed out quickly. to quote the wigmaker in "Amadeus": i am sure you vill luff it! :)

Like Eugene, I too have not submitted additional images to Alamy due to the expense/time/effort to create and mail CD's. I've been waiting all this time for the upload to send images.....and now they make me wait even longer....

I am WAITING for the magic possibility to upload from my computers.
    Hope it will work soon!
These days most transactions of business happen on the web so it will suit me fine.
    Still waiting....;-)
