Apologies first. Over the last couple of days quite a few of you trying to upload images have been having problems with lost connections etc. We think we have traced the problem down to one of our upload servers. We have fixed this but will continue to monitor the situation.
Thanks to all of you who are reporting successes and failures with AlamyUpload in the forum. We are reading your comments and finding them a useful source of additional information.
Update on roll-out
The roll-out is progressing well and we are now prioritising those contributors who have submitted recently. We will have enabled AlamyUpload for this group of contributors in the next week or so. We will then move on to all remaining contributors and hope to have completed the roll-out by the end of August.
Why stage the roll-out?
It was clear from our testing that releasing AlamyUpload results in a flurry of initial upload activity from a contributor ("giving it a go"). Given the number of contributors we have, we wanted to ensure that our infrastructure wouldn’t struggle to accommodate the demand. The best solution was to enable contributors' accounts in several groups. In addition, we wanted to gradually take up the strain so that we could manage any technical issues resulting from increasing the number of uploaders.
Hints and Tips
- For the majority of broadband users the upload speed is much slower than the download speed so do not expect uploading to be as quick as downloading.
- In our view JPEGs saved at Photoshop compression level 10 are as good in terms of quality as those saved at 11 or 12 and are no more likely to fail QC. Saving at level 10 produces a smaller file size which will therefore be quicker to upload.
- Some clear patterns of usage are emerging which you might find useful. UK evening and night time (17:00 - 00:00 GMT) tend to be the busiest so avoiding these times may increase the speed of upload.
