To be ready for AlamyUpload you may wish to check that it will work on your operating system and choice of browser. Here are the minimum requirements.

Mac users

Apple Macintosh X 10.4 with Safari and Firefox

  1. is supported on Mac OS X 10.4 and later.
  2. AlamyUpload is supported on the following browsers:
    • Safari
    • Firefox 1.5 and later. To check which version of Firefox you have:
      1. start Firefox;
      2. click Firefox in the top menu;
      3. click About Mozilla Firefox.
  3. AlamyUpload uses a Java Applet which requires version 5 or later (also called version 1.5) of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). To check which version you are running:
    1. visit www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml;
    2. if the JRE is installed and enabled you will see an animated figure, above which will be the version information. The version of the JRE must be 1.5 or greater.
    3. if the version is wrong, or you do not see the animated character, you will need to do one or more of the following:
      1. Install JRE 1.5 or later from the Apple website.
      2. Update to JRE 1.5 or later from the Apple website.
      3. Enable Java from within Firefox Options:
        1. start Firefox;
        2. click Firefox and then Preferences;
        3. click the Content tab;
        4. select the Enable Java option.
  4. If you use Mac OS X 10.4, you should already have version 5 of the JRE installed. However, you may want to visit the Apple website to download the latest version for your system; and you may may need to configure it as the default version. To do this:
    1. On your Mac, use the Java Preferences Utility found in the directory:
      Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/
    2. Restart your browser for this change to take effect.

PC users

Windows PC with Internet Explorer

  1. AlamyUpload is supported on Internet Explorer 6 and later. To check which version you have:
    1. start Internet Explorer;
    2. click Help;
    3. click About Internet Explorer.
  2. AlamyUpload uses an Active X component which is installed as the page loads.
  3. If you still have problems, it may be because you need Administrator privileges on your computer. Please ask your network administrator for assistance.

    1. start Firefox;
    2. click Help;

    2. if the JRE is installed and enabled you will see an animated figure above which will be the version information. The version of the JRE must be 1.5 or greater.
    3. if the version is wrong, or you do not see the animated character, you will need to do one or more of the following:
      1. Install JRE 1.5 or later from the Java website.
      2. Update to JRE 1.5 or later from the Java website.

    Will AlamyUpload work with Firefox on Linux?

    Please keep the option of submitting cd's for a while after this takes place.
    I know it will be great for all photographers not based in the U.K. and I am happy about this but as someone who has had huge problems downloading with FTP and not too up to date with this kind of thing I would rather carry on in the old way of submissions.
    As I say good luck to all overseas and hope it makes it so much easier!
    Colin.

    I'm about to make a huge submission of humorous images (now that I'm independent again) but I'd like to know if you're absolutley certain that the uploader will not work on OS 10.3.9? Mine is an older iBook running Panther and may not be able to run Tiger as I only have a 700 mega hertz G3 processor. Should I try it anyway?
    Thanks,

    YAY!! I can't wait, rock on :)

    Given how often Java crashes my Firefox browser and given the speed throttle, wouldn't FTP be a better bet? :-)

    Not everyone has OS 4 plus, i for one will not be updating my kit for a year or so. I suggest ALAMy find a way of accepting uploads from OSX 3.9 ASAP, or else it's more discs in the post...think of the foot print !

    I wish this could be expedited as sending images by post from overseas like Sri Lanka where I am is such a slow process and that last CD reached Alamy damaged.

    While the process works well within its file size limitations, the 20 MB compressed size limit is ridiculously small. A decent scan from a 35 mm slide with current hardware (i.e., at 5400 dpi) produces jpegs in the 25-30 MB range. 4x5 inch scans to the maxium acceptable size of 200 MB uncompressed are about 30-60 MB jpegs.

    While it may work well for digital folks, for serious film users alamy upload is unsuitable. Given that a 60 MB file may take about 15 minutes to upload over DSL (quite a bit faster over T1), I cannot fathom the file size restriction. It would be nice to level the playing field for all contributors.
